Lots of people say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and judging by the size of the breakfasts at 11 Newland Streetʼs Ye Olde Café, ironically a new café, they take this saying seriously…very seriously.

The menu is packed full of traditional breakfast dishes including beans or scrambled egg on toast and a few welcome surprises that are very rarely seen on breakfast menus, such as liver, egg and bacon. Ye Olde Café also offer copious amounts of extras to go with your choice of breakfast, from bubble and squeak to a frankfurter. This is all irrelevant because the jewels in the oversized crown are the English breakfasts. Starting at just £3.00 for egg, 2 bacon slices, sausage, beans and toast, through to £7.50 for the Ultimate Breakfast consisting of 2 eggs, 3 bacon slices, 3 sausages, chips, black pudding, mushroom, beans, tin tomatoes and toast. I went for the medium priced, £5.00, Full English (seen in the picture) and a cappuccino.

The sheer size of the breakfast made me intrigued, if not a little frightened, about the size of the Ultimate Breakfast. Is it even possible that one person could actually eat an Ultimate Breakfast? It is refreshing to know that in this time of cut backs that you can still get a proper full English breakfast without paying over the top.

My choice, the Full English, came with fresh buttered toast, incredible runny eggs, fantastic bacon, sausages, hash browns and beans. The coffee I ordered with my breakfast was superbly prepared in a traditional coffee machine and was frothy and light.

One of the customers that was also in Ye Olde Café as I was conducting my review ordered a latte that looked tremendous. Next time I visit I will definitely be having one. The Full English breakfast was more than enough for me and I was full to bursting point, as was my partner who had scrambled eggs. In total, for two people, the bill came to less than £10.00 and there was more than enough food to leave you comfortably full throughout the day.

The waitress service was conducted with a lovely smile and conversation with the people I assume to be regulars. It was an added bonus to the experience and she made sure everybody was happy and enjoying their meal.

Ye Olde Café also provide a vast selection of meals for lunch including various grills, baguettes, burgers and home-cooked lunches. If the breakfast is anything to go by then these meals will be perfect for that naughty, and rather large, lunch.
